English version
In February, Italy consumed 25.5 billion kWh of electricity, an increase of 2.8% compared to the same month in 2021. According to data from Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, the industrial sector also recorded a 5% increase compared to February 2021, thanks to the substantial recovery of the main sectors monitored. In the first two months of the year, national demand increased by 2.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2021 (+1.7% adjusted value). Analysing the data in detail, February had the same number of working days (20) and an average monthly temperature that was 0.5°C lower than February 2021. The figure for electricity demand, adjusted for calendar and temperature effects, grew by 2.4%. The February 2022 trend was positive across the country: +2.9% in the North, +2.3% in Central Italy and +2.8% in the South and on the islands. Cyclical data for electricity demand, adjusted for seasonal, calendar and temperature effects, grew by 0.8% compared to January of this year. In February 2022, 86% of electricity demand in Italy was met by national production and the remainder (14%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net domestic production amounted to 22.2 billion kWh (+7.5%). Renewables accounted for 29% of electricity demand. Wind (+32.8%), thermal (+19%), photovoltaic (+16.6%) and geothermal (+1.9%) production sources are growing, while hydroelectric is down (-51.3%) due to the low rainfall which characterised the period and resulted in low reservoir levels which were among the lowest recorded in the past 50 years. Relative to the import/export balance, the change amounted to -19.8% due to the combined effect of an increase in exports (+99%) and a decrease in imports (-14.8%), continuing the trend seen in the previous three months. Terna’s IMCEI index, which considers the industrial consumption of energy-intensive companies, is once again showing growth after the decrease seen in the previous month: Terna data show an increase of 5% compared to February 2021 and of 2.8% compared to January 2022 (adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects). The results of all the main sectors were positive, with the exception of the transportation and non-ferrous metals sectors. A detailed analysis of provisional 2021 and 2022 monthly electricity demand is available in the publication “Monthly Report on the Electricity System”, under the section “Electric System>>Dispatching>>Operating Data>>Monthly Report” at www.terna.it.Real-time data on the operation of the national electricity system can also be found on the Terna app, available on all app stores: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.terna.energia&hl=ithttps://apps.apple.com/it/app/terna/id1458535498
